Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner Tax Problems

Lest we forget How Simple the Tax Code Is (and How Easy Tax Preparation Software is to Use)

We all remember the tax problems which Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner had to deal with during his Congressional confirmation hearing held in early 2009.

The future treasury secretary of the United States had to admit to some rather simple and embarassing mistakes, and we can draw one of three possible conclusions from his example.

we can possibly conclude:

  • That even a presumably highly intelligent man gets confused by the tax code OR
  • That he falsified (perhaps "mis-characterized" is a kinder word) the nature of his income on his tax return and hoped he wouldn't get caught. OR
  • Even though he is intelligent, he can't understand TurboTax tax preparation software.

Whichever one it is, its not a pretty picture when you and I are so strictly and harshly judged by the IRS when it is led by a man who isn't exactly a great role model for we taxpayers. We hope that Timothy Geithner and the federal government can improve their disclosures about income and pay their fair share of taxes.
